Things to do in New York

At the Museum of the City of New York on 1220 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan's Upper East Side is a presentation of "Timescape." This is a 25-minute multimedia program narrated by Stanley Tucci, that traces the growth of New York though animated maps, archival photos and painting from the museum's collections.

Winter is here, but the fun doesn't stop in the Big Apple. February is the beginning of the Chinese Year of the Rat and New York City has a varitey and celebrations and parades to commemorate the event. February 07, 2008 is the official Chinese New Year. There will be a firecracker detonation, visits from local politicians and community leaders and it is intended to ward off evil spirits.

February 10 is when you can see the Annual Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade and Festival. The parade winds throughtout Chinatown along Mott, Canal and Bayard Streets and along East Broadway. It features elaborate floats, marching bands, lion and dragon dances, Asian musicians, and acrobats. The parade begins at 1 p.m. and is expected to conclude about 3 p.m. at which time an outdoor cultural festival will take palce on Bayard Street.

We'll admit that Quidditch isn't exactly our game, we'll take a subway series any day, but even we can't deny the excitement coming our way on the 20th. Who would have thought a fictional book character could create such global anticipation, and if anything we're glad people are actually excited about reading for a change rather than something else. So we suppose it's only fitting on Friday the 13th that we should offer our suggestions on where to go to get wild about Harry. So if you're out of floo powder, or don't even know what that is (and of course you know, otherwise you wouldn't queue up at a bookstore at midnight, would you?), hop in a limo and we'll help get you to the last book before the witching hour is over.

McNally Robinson on Prince Street will host a Harry Potter party for grownups on the big night. Come by around 10PM for live music and fortune telling before the book goes on sale.

Barnes and Noble at Union Square also has a party planned, with a costume contest and appearance by actor Jim Dale, who narrates the audio versions of the series.
