The wonders of the New York Public Library

Few buildings evoke such awe and wonder as the Stephen A. Schwarzman building, the official name fro the main branch of the New York Public Library. Located on Fifth Avenue and 42nd street, the building itself is an architectural marvel and from the impressive lion statues that grace the front steps to the intricate details of the paintings that grace its walls.

Of course, what makes the library remarkable is what it contains. The building houses around 15 million items from ancient Japanese scrolls to contemporary novels and poetry, and the collection grows every day.

This impressive collection is getting special attention this year, as the branch celebrates its 100th anniversary. Through March 4, visitors can view such rarely seen items as the first Gutenberg Bible acquired in the United States and Jazz legend John Coltrane's handwritten score of "Lover Man." More than 250 items will be on display, so there is bound to be something to delight any visitor.
