New York is always Open

openhousenewyork, held October 8-9 around the city, is a celebration of New York architecture, offering free tours of noted and unique buildings in all five boroughs. Many of the building architects will also be on hand for lectures and Q&A sessions, and special children's programs are also planned. Some of the highlights on this annual presentation of more than 150 buildings includes:

  • Edgar Allen Poe Cottage in the Bronx - See the quaint, unassuming home where some of the greatest horror stories were born...this tour is great way to ring in the Halloween season.
  • Brooklyn Museum - One of the largest art museums in the country is on display as this tour focuses mainly on the architecture rather than the masterpieces it houses.
  • Apryl Miller Studios - Manhattan is ripe with art galleries, yet Apryl Miller's studio is a visual feast of color you won't soon forget.
  • Fort Tilden - See how the country defended itself during the first world wars at this historic Queens site
  • Staten Island Museum - Absorb the history of Staten Island and New York's Buddhist community in the architecture of this and other area buildings.
A New York tour like this cannot possibly be done on foot in one weekend! Consider reserving a car to enjoy the open houses, or even a small passenger van to take family and friends.
