Bidding farewell to a favorite son
Broadway's lights are a bit dimmer with the loss of August Wilson, Pulitzer playwright and arguably the first voice of contemporary Black American theater. To date eight of Wilson's plays have been produced on Broadway, all of which have been nominated for the Best Play Tony.
Gem of the Ocean was the last of Wilson's plays to be seen on Broadway, at the Walter Kerr Theatre (now home to Tony winner Doubt). Presently Wilson's Radio Golf is looking for a home, and doubt it will find one soon.
